In the world of gardening and plant lovers, there is a very special group of people: the fuchsia addicts or fuchsia nuts!
They are spread over all the continents of the world. There are fuchsia addicts in almost all countries of Europe and America, in Australia… And, even in Japan, the unconditional fans of this plant are increasingly numerous.
One often hears them discuss among themselves how they began with this or that cultivar or with this or that variety, with a plant acquired by chance in a store or a supermarket, with a pot inherited from a grandmother or an aunt, a gift from a neighbour… The truth is that soon, if the first plant has thrived, the garden, the terrace or the balcony of the fuchsia addict is invariably full of countless varieties of fuchsias. And the collection often grows in such a way that it compels its owner to widen the space intended for his plants, to redesign his garden or to build shelters and greenhouses in which to grow them.
When one starts one simply cannot stop! Fuchsia growing is an activity that increases day after day, giving great pleasure and frequently affecting all those around us… It is thus an occupation which presents all the typical symptoms of an addiction, hence the name: FUCHSIA ADDICTS.
But, unlike other dependencies, our addiction is super-healthy and extremely positive.
The reason why this simple plant awakes such a passion is easily explained: it is a very versatile plant, very fast growing and very generous in flowering; the results obtained are immediate; and its flowers are of incredible beauty, due to the enormous variety of colours, form and size.
There are no words to describe the emotion and pleasure you feel when you admire a fuchsia in full bloom, especially when you raised it yourself from the very beginning, from a simple cutting with a couple of small leaves that you placed in a little pot a few months earlier. It is pure magic!
Fuchsias provide you no end of activity. The fuchsia addict must be shrewd and active. We are dealing with a plant made for the ant-like gardener, one who derives pleasure from constant activity: fuchsias need to be rooted, pruned and stopped, sprayed and sprinkled, watered, fed, and pruned and stopped again; they need to be protected from frost and from dry and arid winds; they have to be kept free of fungi, bugs and other pests; they need to be repotted, trimmed into shape and faded flowers must be removed; they need to be prepared for the winter months; seeds and cuttings need to be taken… It's like looking after a pet: they give us both work and pleasure.
But, most important of all, fuchsias are plants which create social contacts, since many fuchsia associations exist in many regions and countries. Fuchsia lovers constantly seek other amateurs to share the results of their efforts and their experiments and to exchange cultivars to add to their collections. And, especially, they seek someone to whom they can offer a cutting! Never will a fuchsia addict refuse you a small cutting which will transform you into another fuchsia addict!
This Web belongs to the Asociación Española de la Fuchsia, a place fuchsia addicts needed in order to share their hobby and their pleasure.
There are already lots of us, fuchsia nuts. Therefore… beware! If you have read this far, it probably means that you will soon be one more.
